Before the Transformation: A Sunny Spot in Rob and Amy’s Eastham Garden

This before photograph marks the starting point of our composite decking project at Rob and Amy’s lovely home on Adaston Avenue in Eastham. Their long garden offered plenty of potential, particularly towards the back, where an unattractive outbuilding had recently been demolished. With the building gone, there was finally an opportunity to give this part of the garden a fresh purpose.

Rob and Amy’s garden on Adaston Avenue in Eastham now has a welcoming seating area where an unattractive outbuilding once stood. Their new 4.1m × 5m composite deck combines anthracite and graphite in a framed design, giving the space a defined edge and a contemporary finish.

Positioned towards the back of their long garden, the decking makes the most of a spot that enjoys sunshine throughout the day. It creates a separate place to relax away from the house, with room for garden furniture, outdoor dining and spending time together.

The project came at a memorable moment for the family, with Amy having welcomed their baby just a week before we arrived. This previously overlooked part of the garden now offers somewhere for Rob and Amy to enjoy a quiet coffee or catch up with friends and family.

Composite decking also keeps routine maintenance straightforward, without the regular sanding, staining or painting associated with timber. From the former footprint of an unwanted building, this sunny corner has become a useful and attractive part of their Eastham garden.

Composite decking supplied and fitted from approximately £140 per m², subject to a site survey.

They installed a composite deck for us. It only took them a couple of days, and it turned out lovely. Very happy with the result, especially given the fair price.

Why Choose Composite Decking Wirral?

Choosing composite decking is about more than picking a colour. The people who prepare the ground, build the supporting frame and finish the edges have just as much influence on the result as the boards themselves.

At Composite Decking Wirral, we take the time to understand your garden and how you want to use it. Whether you’re planning a small seating area, a space for outdoor dining or decking towards the sunny end of your garden, our aim is to create something attractive, practical and properly installed.

A Local Team With Local Roots

Based in Greasby, we work across the Wirral, including Heswall, West Kirby, Hoylake, Moreton, Wallasey, Prenton, Birkenhead, Bromborough and Eastham.

Our founder, Mark McCabe, has lived in Greasby for more than 40 years and has strong connections with the local community. When you contact us, you can speak directly with Mark about your ideas, ask questions and arrange a quotation.

We’re a family-run, fully insured business, and we know that inviting a team to work at your home requires trust. Clear communication and respect for your property matter throughout the job.

We Plan Around Your Garden

Every garden presents different opportunities. Some have awkward changes in level; others need careful thought about access, drainage or where the sun falls.

We consider these details before recommending a layout. That includes the size and position of the deck, the direction of the boards, any steps required and how the finished area will connect with the rest of your garden.

At Rob and Amy’s home in Eastham, for example, we fitted a 4.1m × 5m anthracite and graphite deck towards the back of their long garden. The position made use of a sunny area previously occupied by an unwanted outbuilding, giving that space a completely new purpose.

Care Beneath the Boards

The finished surface is what you see, but the supporting structure deserves just as much attention.

Our installation planning considers:

  • Suitable ground preparation and support.

  • Subframe construction and joist spacing.

  • Drainage and ventilation beneath the deck.

  • Expansion gaps and appropriate fixings.

  • Neat edges, trims and transitions.

Requirements vary between decking systems, so installation should follow the specifications of the product being fitted. A smart-looking deck starts with careful work underneath.

Help Choosing the Right Finish

Anthracite, graphite, warmer wood-effect shades and contrasting borders can produce very different results. We can help you consider colours and layouts that suit your home, garden and intended use.

A framed design can define a seating area, while the direction of the boards can influence how the space looks. These finishing decisions deserve thought before installation begins.

Less Routine Maintenance

Composite decking appeals to customers who want to enjoy their garden with less ongoing work. It generally avoids the regular sanding, staining and painting associated with traditional timber.

It still needs cleaning and care, and we encourage customers to follow the manufacturer’s guidance. We’ll discuss the chosen product’s maintenance requirements and warranty terms so you know what to expect.

Composite Decking Wirral — Frequently Asked Questions

How much does composite decking cost to supply and fit?

Our fitted composite decking price is approximately £140 per square metre. As a guide, a 4m × 5m deck covers 20 square metres, giving an estimated cost of £2,800.

The final quotation depends on the boards selected, ground conditions, access and the work required. Removing existing decking, adding steps, building raised structures or installing balustrades can affect the price.

We confirm what is included in your quotation before work begins.

How long does installation take?

A straightforward 4m × 5m composite deck normally takes around two to three days to install.

This allows time for preparation, constructing the subframe, fitting the boards and completing the edges. Difficult access, demolition, changes in level, additional features or poor weather may extend the schedule.

Does composite decking need much maintenance?

Composite decking is very low maintenance, making it a practical choice for homeowners who want more time to enjoy their garden.

Unlike traditional timber decking, it generally needs no regular treating, painting, staining or oiling. Routine care usually involves sweeping away leaves and washing the surface periodically, following the board manufacturer’s instructions.

Low maintenance still means giving it an occasional clean, particularly where dirt or algae accumulates.

How should I clean composite decking?

For routine cleaning, a soft brush and water with a suitable mild cleaning product are usually sufficient. Clear away leaves, clean spills promptly and keep the gaps between boards free from debris.

Pressure washers should only be used where the manufacturer permits them, following its recommended pressure and distance settings. Avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaning methods unless specifically approved for your decking.

What is a subframe, and why does it matter?

The subframe is the supporting framework beneath the decking boards. It carries the deck and helps keep the finished surface stable and properly supported.

A good installation considers the strength of the framework, joist spacing, ground supports, drainage and ventilation. These details are essential even though most of them are hidden once the boards are fitted.

What materials can be used for the subframe?

Depending on the decking system and project, suitable options may include correctly specified treated timber or a compatible metal framing system.

The choice depends on factors such as deck height, ground conditions, exposure and intended loads. Composite boards do not make a timber subframe immune to decay, so appropriate materials, construction and moisture management remain important.

We discuss the proposed subframe as part of your quotation.

How far apart should the joists be?

Joist spacing must follow the decking manufacturer’s installation specifications. There is no single spacing that suits every board.

Board profile, thickness, laying direction and intended use can all affect the support required. Diagonal boards or areas subject to heavier loads may require a different arrangement.

Does water drain through composite decking?

Gaps between the boards allow rainwater to pass through. However, the area underneath also needs suitable drainage so that water does not collect around the supports.

During planning, we consider ground conditions, ventilation and any fall required by the decking system. The boards should form part of a properly designed installation rather than conceal an existing drainage problem.

Can you fit composite decking in a sloping garden?

Yes, decking can help create a usable area where garden levels vary. Depending on the site, the design may include a raised platform, steps or separate levels.

Raised decking needs appropriate structural planning, and planning permission or other approvals may apply. We assess the proposed layout before confirming the work.

Is composite decking slippery when wet?

Some boards have textured surfaces designed to improve grip, but no outdoor surface should be considered completely slip-proof.

Rain, algae, leaves and dirt can make decking slippery. Choosing a suitable product, providing drainage and keeping the surface clean all help reduce the risk.

What colours and finishes are available?

Available colours depend on the chosen range and may include anthracite, graphite, grey and warmer wood-effect shades.

Contrasting borders can create a framed finish, as shown in our Eastham installation. We can discuss combinations that suit your home and garden.

Can I put furniture or a hot tub on the decking?

Garden furniture can usually be accommodated as part of a normal decking design. A hot tub requires specific structural consideration, because its filled weight is substantially greater.

Tell us about hot tubs or other heavy features before installation so the supporting structure can be designed appropriately.

What guarantee comes with the decking?

Warranty terms depend on the manufacturer and product selected. Product warranties and installation guarantees are separate, and may cover different things.

We explain the applicable cover, conditions and maintenance requirements for the decking included in your quotation.
